Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA)

The Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA) became law in December, 2013. This landmark legislation outlines a clear and proactive process to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility. The AMA is the next step to fulfilling government’s vision of full participation and inclusion for all Manitobans. The AMA affects all Manitobans: individuals confronting barriers every day, as well as those in a position to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility. Accessibility standards are the AMA building blocks to make real, measurable and effective changes to accessibility.

Information and Communications will be the third standard to be released by AMA. It will address barriers to accessing information provided in print, in person, on websites or in other formats. Although we do not know at this time what the specifics of the standard will be, we can look to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and British Columbia's Accessibility 2024 for guidance.
